Expert Guide to Drain Tiles: Definition, Function, and Importance

Drain tiles, also known as footing tiles or weeping tiles, are an essential component in the underground drainage system of any property. They are typically made of plastic, and have small slits cut lengthwise into them. The purpose of these slits is to allow water to enter the drain tile, which then channels it away from the foundation of the building.

The drain tiles are buried underground and surrounded by aggregate rocks, which are larger than the slits. The aggregate rocks help to prevent soil from falling through the slits and clogging the drain tile. This arrangement allows water in the surrounding soil to flow into the drain tile and be carried away, reducing the risk of flooding and water damage to the foundation of the building.

Drain tiles are commonly used near basement foundations to prevent flooding, but they can also be used in farmers’ fields to drain waterlogged fields. In these cases, the fields are referred to as “tiled.” Drain tiles can be used anywhere soil needs to be drained.

In addition to preventing flooding, drain tiles can also be used in septic drain fields for septic tanks. In this application, clarified sewage from the septic tank is fed into drain tiles that are buried shallowly in the drain field. The drain tiles then spread the liquid throughout the drain field, allowing it to be safely absorbed into the surrounding soil.

When installing drain tiles, it is important to ensure that the top of the product is lower than the bottom of the interior concrete floor. This will allow water to flow into the drain tile and be carried away. The drain tile should also be connected to a sump pit, which is located on the interior of the home. The ground water collected in the sump pit can then be removed by a sump pump. The exhausted water can be pumped a safe distance from the home by means of a flexible line or, in some areas, into the city storm drains. Care should be taken not to create flooding conditions for adjoining properties.

Drain tiles are a critical component of any underground drainage system, and regular maintenance and cleaning of the tiles is essential to ensure their proper functioning. If you suspect that your drain tiles may be clogged or damaged, it is important to contact a professional plumber as soon as possible to prevent water damage and other issues. With the right care and maintenance, drain tiles can provide reliable and effective protection against flooding and water damage for many years.
